Notification summaries aim to make your notifications more helpful. Instead of just showing the first line of a text or email, Apple Intelligence gives you a little summary of the message. I can see how that could be handy, but honestly, I mostly found it unnecessary and sometimes pretty funny!

As a journalist, I can say that transcribing audio is super tedious and a bit cringe-worthy. That’s why I’m really glad Apple added AI-powered voice transcription in iOS. Just think of all the ways it could help, like transcribing lectures or supporting people with hearing impairments. After you record an audio note in the Notes app, you can even see a summary of the recording.

Apple is making good progress with the MacBook Air, but they’ve hit pause on the launch of a new high-end Mac Studio. This desktop is for professionals and doesn’t come with a display. Internally called J575, it was supposed to release alongside the MacBook Air. Now, it’s likely to drop after a software update in March, probably between March and June. They’re also working on an M4 version of the Mac Pro, their most expensive model.

The M4 chip will be the fourth generation of the M-series in the MacBook Air. But it won’t be a new design for the current Air. The M1 MacBook Air came out in 2020 with an older design that was made for Intel chips. We didn’t see the new design until the M2 launched in July 2022. There won’t be any major changes for the M4 version.

The last update for the MacBook Air was in March, featuring the M3 chip. Then in June 2023, they introduced a 15-inch model with the M2 chip. For most people, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 processor is the way to go. It’s great for web browsing, document editing, coding, and even some light photo and video editing. If you want a bigger screen, better sound, and improved thermal performance, the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip is a fantastic option!

Just a heads-up: the M4 Pro and M4 Max are probably a bit too much for the average user. While the M4 MacBook Pro might seem like the top pick, it’s kind of an oddball. All the MacBook Pros with the standard M-series chips are built on the same chassis as the MacBook Air. Basically, they just added a fan to squeeze out a bit more power. So, it feels like it’s stuck between two worlds.

If you often multitask with YouTube or use heavy apps like PowerPoint, Keynote, Canva, or Photoshop, waiting for the M4 might be worth it since it’ll really amp up the GPU performance. But if you’re just tackling everyday tasks, the M3 will have you covered! Thanks to Apple Silicon, even the entry-level MacBook Air packs enough power and flexibility for aspiring content creators, developers, and artists, while also meeting the needs of IT departments around the globe.

Parting thoughts

In the end, it really comes down to what you need. If you’re good with handling everyday tasks now, I’d say the current MacBook Air is a solid choice. But if you’re aiming for a little more power, it might be worth waiting for the M4.

The Google Pixel 9a might still be a few months away, but early leaks are already hinting at what’s to come. Its predecessor impressed by packing nearly all the high-end features into a more affordable package, including some of Google’s latest camera and AI magic. So, will the Pixel 9a follow in its footsteps?

Design and displays

Google is giving the Pixel 9a flat sides, making it more in line with the rest of the Pixel 9 series. Unlike the Pixel 8a, which had rounded sides, the Pixel 9a keeps things flat but with a slight curve toward the edges. That offers a more comfortable grip. The frame will still be metal, likely aluminum, and the front will feature a flat display with a centered camera hole. While the bezels won’t be as slim as the Pixel 9 Pro, they’ll still be on the thinner side.

Personally, I’m a big fan of flat edges. I like my phones to have a bit more width. With flat sides, the display feels more expansive, and honestly, it’s easier to apply screen protectors too—no fussing with awkward curves. That being said, swiping from the sides does feel a bit smoother with rounded edges. But for me, the benefits of flat edges outweigh the downsides.

Recent leaks suggest the Pixel 9a will have a redesigned rear, with a new camera layout. It almost looks like there’s no camera bump at all. However, this comes with a slightly larger overall device. @OnLeaks reports the Pixel 9a will measure about 6.1 x 2.88 x 0.35 inches, making it taller and wider than the Pixel 8a. Despite the larger size, the camera area will still add about 0.02 inches of thickness.

Color options

The Google Pixel 9a is coming in 4 colors: Iris, Obsidian, Peony, and Porcelain, according to Android Headlines. Out of these, the Porcelain option seems like the one that’ll really stand out. It looks stunning and has some amazing angles, offering a fresh alternative to the usual phone colors. The black (Obsidian) is sleek, but honestly, I always get bored of black phones once that initial “new phone” feeling fades—and they tend to show every little flaw right away!

Cameras

There’s a slight change in the Pixel 9a’s cameras. They’ve swapped out the 64-megapixel main sensor for a 48-megapixel one, which is likely the same sensor used in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While it’s a lower resolution, the new sensor should still deliver better quality photos thanks to its larger pixels.

The Pixel 9a still doesn’t have a telephoto lens, but the 13-megapixel ultrawide and front cameras remain the same as last year. The real improvement comes from the new primary camera. Despite the lower megapixel count, it should offer a noticeable upgrade compared to the Pixel 8a.

Google’s camera system does a great job handling tricky situations like high-contrast lighting or fast-moving subjects. This means its an excellent point-and-shoot option. Additionally, I’m excited to see the AI photography tools from the Pixel 8a, like astrophotography mode and unblurring tools. Android Headlines even says the Pixel 9a will include the new “Add Me” feature, where you can put yourself in group photos. No more asking strangers to snap your pics!

Gaming and performance

What’s the latest on the specs? It’s still a bit of a mystery! So far, we know it’ll come with the Tensor G4 chip. That’s pretty typical for the ‘Pixel a’ series since they usually borrow the same chip from the flagship models. The downside is that the Pixel 9a might be stuck with an older modem. The new modem in the Pixel 9 series boosts connectivity and battery life. It’d be a bummer if the 9a missed out on that upgrade.

While the Tensor G4 doesn’t quite stack up against other flagship processors, it does a great job with everyday tasks and AI stuff. It can’t compete with the raw performance and gaming power of processors like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple A17 Pro. For less demanding games, I expect it should work just fine. Fingers crossed the chip is more efficient so it stays cooler during use!

Google Pixel 9a release date and price

The Pixel 9a isn’t expected to drop until next year, but there’s a surprise! While the Pixel 8a came out in May 2024, and we were expecting the Pixel 9a to follow around the same time, Android Headlines is saying it’ll arrive earlier. In fact, pre-orders and the launch are both set for mid-March 2025.

As for the price, there’s no official word yet. The Pixel 8a launched at $499, and it seems likely that the Pixel 9a will either stick to that price or bump up by $50, landing at $549. The Pixel ‘a’ series has always been popular in the US thanks to its reasonable price, even with Google’s slight price hikes over the years. I just hope they keep it budget-friendly!

Should you hold off?

It looks like the Pixel 9a is shaping up to be a solid option for those who want a budget-friendly device without missing out on some of Google’s signature features. With flat edges, a new camera design, and a few exciting software upgrades, there’s a lot to look forward to.

That said, we’re still a bit away from the Pixel 9a’s launch. It’s not going to be a huge leap from the Pixel 8a. So if you need a new phone now, the Pixel 8a could be a solid pick. And if your budget allows, you might also want to consider going for the Pixel 9.

In a future where humans must prove their humanity in a world full of AI fakes, the OpenAI Orb—now known as the World Orb—offers a solution. This space age-y spherical device scans people’s eyeballs and creates an encrypted digital pass—called a WorldID—that verifies a person’s humanness without capturing images or collecting information.

Our current coexistence with AI isn’t that dire—yet. But with the rise of deepfakes in cyberbullying, political ads, and financial scams, we’ve already seen the very real consequences of not being able to tell a real from a fake. A reliable way to prove humanity could be a useful tool.

But how will the Orb work? And what will we use it for? It’s a bit complex, but today I’m going to break down what we know so far about World’s new device.

World Orb’s origins

Unveiled in May 2023, the Worldcoin Orb was a custom biometric imaging device created by Tools for Humanity. The idea was to provide global access to OpenAI’s digital currency, Worldcoin, through the World ID protocol.

Now, as a second iteration, the new World Orb has 30 fewer parts than its predecessor. This makes the device easier and cheaper to produce and, thus, simpler to distribute worldwide.

Engineering for scale

So what’s under the hood of the new OpenAI Orb? According to World, it’s powered by the latest NVIDIA Jetson Chipset—and it has almost 5x the AI performance over the earlier Orb version. It allows faster and more seamless proof of human verifications.

There are also enhanced visible light and infrared cameras, which allow the device to work in a range of environments and lighting. It also has 5G connectivity and a fully removable external SD card.

How does the Orb work?

In a nutshell, those fancy cameras snap photos of your face and eyes, which get encrypted and stored on your phone. Only you can control them.

The photos then generate permanently encrypted codes, which are stored in secure databases, preventing double verifications.

It’s an easy process, one completed in just a few seconds, apparently. People can delete their data at any time.

What is World ID?

World ID refers to the information gathered by the Orb: images, metadata, and derived data (including the iris fragment).

The World ID lets you anonymously and securely verify that you are a human for online purposes. So, it would make a great, safe tool for things like signing into social apps or voting online.

Meanwhile, the Face Auth feature gives you an extra layer of security. Inspired by the face authentication tech millions of us already use, it ensures your World ID can only be used by you—the person who created it.

Privacy and Orb

Personally, I’m not keen on relying on an OpenAI Orb to capture my biometric information. But World says that the Orb is eminently secure and private. It checks that you’re uniquely human and haven’t signed up before.

It does this by looking at the fragment generated from your iris. No two people have the same iris pattern, so your set of encrypted numbers based on your iris pattern (the iris fragment) is yours alone.

And since the fragment is just a string of numbers, it reveals nothing about you. Not even your name, just that you’re human.

What the future holds for Orb

World says that it has verified nearly 7 million humans so far. Meanwhile, governments worldwide–including Kenya and France—are investigating the company’s operations due to privacy concerns.

The investigations haven’t slowed the company down. According to World’s Chief Design Officer Rich Heley, “We need more Orbs—lots more Orbs, probably on the order of 1,000 times more orbs than we have today.”

World is also starting “Orb on Demand,” which is exactly what it sounds like. That’s right, you might be able to order an eye scan the way you order a pizza.

Parting thoughts

I’d be thrilled to have a unique and anonymous way to verify my identity online. Although we are, most likely, still experiencing AI in its infancy, it’s already impossible to tell an AI-generated image from a real one. So, the time is ripe for a technology like the World ID.

However, I have serious doubts about whether or not a private company can remain secure and handle highly personal biometric data. Since the issue of identifying humanity isn’t a pressing concern at the moment, let’s see where this one takes us!
